Off-Campus Access to Library Resources
As an off campus SMEC student it is important to make yourselfaware that the Curtin University Library & Information Service has specific services aimed at helping you achieve your study objectives. Below are the 4 most important things for you to know about accessing library resources.
Accessing Books on Your Topic
You have two choices to access books:
- You can use your local university library even though you are enrolled in a Curtin course. To do this you need to apply for a "letter of indemnity" from the Curtin University Library. Once you have received this letter take it to your local library and set up your borrowing rights. To apply for a "letter of indemnity" please contact OCLS on offcampus@boris.curtin.edu.au with the details of the institution you wish to get borrowing rights with. Note: Please check that your local library is willing to participate.
- You can search the Curtin University catalogue from the Library home page at http://lisweb.curtin.edu.au/. If you find an item here or elsewhere that is not available to you locally it may be possible to use the Inter Library Loan System to get this item sent to you. For details, please read the Off Campus Services pages at: http://lisweb.curtin.edu.au/services/ocls.html.
Finding and Accessing Journal Articles Online
You can search for journal articles from the Curtin Library home page at http://lisweb.curtin.edu.au/. Many of which can be found in full text (meaning the whole article will be available to download once you find it).
To access the databases simply click on the "Gecko: Scholarly Electronic Database" link from the library home page.
Step-by-step guides to searching the databases and other training tools can be found at http://lisweb.curtin.edu.au/resources/.
ID and PIN Access to Library Services
Many Library services require an ID and PIN to access them. Most importantly you need to find out your library ID and PIN to access the Scholarly Electronic Databases to find journal articles.
First try the following to determine your ID and PIN.
Go to the Scholarly Electronic Databases and use your student number as a guide and add EC1 to the front of this number.
Eg. Student ID 12345678 = EC112345678
Your PIN should be the last four digits of the student number from the University. Give this a try. If access is denied please go to http://andre.curtin.edu.au/eclectic/eclecticinput.asp and request an ID and PIN to access the databases.
