Fees, Exemptions, Scholarships and Other Benefits
Costs and Benefits for Doctoral Students in 2008
- Currently, Australian citizens and permanent residents and New Zealand citizens (irrespective of the place of living at the time) are eligible for exemption from all tuition costs associated with the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS).
- Typical cost for full fee paying students is around AUS $2,900 per unit, or AUS $5,800 per half-year semester for a part-time student.* The minimum time is eight half-year semesters.
- Financial support for all students (up to AUS $2,000) to present their research at a national or international conference towards the end of candidacy.
- Financial assistance with some of the costs associated with visiting Perth to work on their thesis (for students residing outside Perth).
- For overseas students there are a small number of scholarships for full-time study in Australia (International Postgraduate Research Scholarships, IPRS).
- Possible exemptions from some coursework based on professional experience.

Costs and Benefits for Masters Students in 2008
- Students can apply for exemptions for up to 25% of the course based on professional experience.
- Typical cost for Australian students is around AUS $1400 per unit.
- Typical cost for full fee paying students is around AUS $2150 per unit, or $17,200 for the whole MSc.*

Costs and Benefits for Postgraduate Diploma Students in 2008
- Students can apply for exemptions for up to 50% of the course based on professional experience.
APAWS and Curtin Scholarships
For full-time study for thesis degrees Australian Postgraduate Awards with Stipend (APAWS) and Curtin University Postgraduate Scholarships (CUPS) provide a tax-free indexed living allowance, and a thesis and relocation allowance, as well as exemption from HECS.
Fee-Help
For Masters degrees and Postgraduate Diplomas, Australian students may apply for an interest-free loan from Fee-Help which provides deferred payment arrangements similar to HECS.
